This pendant features a rare Ancient Silver Alexander the Great Tetradrachm coin, showcasing the legendary profile of Alexander the Great adorned with an elephant-skinned helmet and the horn of Ammon Ra. It is rare to find Alexander dressed in an Elephant skinned helmet, which is what makes this coin so scarce. He is usually portrayed in a Lion Skinned Helmet, which is a common variation of the coin.
The elephant-skinned helmet on Alexander the Great's coin alludes to his conquests in India, where elephants were used in warfare, symbolizing his ability to integrate the Mystery Wisdom of the cultures that he overcame and united.
The presence of an Ammon-Ra horn on the coin, refers to the ram's horn associated with the Egyptian god Ammon (or Amun-Ra). After his conquest of Egypt in 332 BCE, Alexander was declared the son of Ammon-Ra at the Oracle of Siwa, linking him to the god's power and legitimacy as a ruler. The ram's horn, a symbol of Ammon-Ra, was often incorporated into his coinage, particularly on tetradrachms, to emphasize his divine status and authority.
Estimating the exact date of the strike for an Alexander the Great Tetradrachm, especially one depicting him with an elephant-skinned helmet, requires considering his historical campaigns and minting practices. Alexander's campaign in India occurred between 327 and 325 BCE, during his eastward expansion. Alexander Tetradrachms with this specific design were likely minted shortly after, between 325 and 323 BCE, as he returned to Babylon. Alexander died before he had a chance to return to Macedonia where his teacher, Aristotle awaited him. Posthumous issues continued under his successors. Given the coin's condition and style, it could date to this narrow window or slightly later under the early Hellenistic kingdoms, such as those of the Seleucids or Ptolemies, who continued his imagery.
Rudolf Steiner spoke in depth about Alexander during his lectures now entitled World History that were given in the evenings of the Christmas Conference after Christmas 1923. Alexander figures significantly in the karmic history of the Anthroposophical Movement.
