Michaelmas Medal, France, 1820 (Bronze)
This rare bronze medal, struck in France in 1820, commemorates the birth of Henry, Duke of Bordeaux, on September 29, 1820—coinciding with the Feast Day of the Archangel Michael. Roughly the size of a silver dollar, this scarce and highly desirable piece is a unique example of a true Michaelmas Medal.
Obverse: The Archangel Michael stands triumphantly over Lucifer, wielding a flaming sword aloft—a powerful symbol of cosmic intelligence and divine authority, inspired by a Raphael painting honoring the Michaelmas festival.Reverse: A woman, representing the Duchess of Berry, baptizes her newborn son under radiant sun rays, with a bust of her late husband, Charles Ferdinand, Duke of Berry, in the background. The inscription reads: "God gives him to us; our hearts and arms are His," invoking a divine will for the child and the enduring Bourbon lineage.Historical Context: The assassination of Charles Ferdinand, Duke of Berry, on February 13, 1820, threatened the extinction of the Bourbon royal line. The posthumous birth of his son, Henry, on September 29, 1820, ensured the dynasty's continuation, making this medal a poignant symbol of hope and divine providence.
There is some light white substance on the Reverse in the field to the right of the woman. The medal is priced accordingly.
Price includes shipping and insurance to U.S. and Canada.
