This exquisite oversized commemorative medal honors the legendary German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Crafted with exceptional detail, the medal features a well-defined high-relief bust of Goethe on the obverse, showcasing his iconic profile with intricate attention to his attire and hair, signed by artist A. Scharff, 1890.
  • Anton Scharff was a well-known Austrian medalist and engraver who was known to produce high-quality numismatic works during that period.
  • While there are many editions and interpretations of Goethe's Faust, medals commemorating the work by notable artists like Scharff are less common.
The reverse artistically portrays the prologue in Heaven from Goethe's epic Faust, depicting a dramatic wager between God and Mephistopheles over the soul of Dr. Faustus. God, seated on a globe of the world and turning his ear to Mephistopheles, embodies divine faith in Faust's ultimate redemption. To the left, four archangelic beings with outspread wings add a celestial presence, one holding a sword aloft. Mephistopheles, in contrast, exudes cunning as he bets on leading Faust to damnation, setting the stage for Faust's fateful pact for knowledge and worldly pleasures.

Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Anthroposophy, had a deep and influential relationship with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s works, particularly Faust, which significantly shaped his philosophical and spiritual ideas. Steiner, a scholar and spiritual scientist with a keen interest in Goethe’s scientific and literary contributions, saw Faust as more than a literary masterpiece—it was a profound exploration of human striving, spiritual evolution, and the interplay between material and metaphysical realms.

Steiner’s engagement with Faust began during his early work editing Goethe’s scientific writings for the Goethe-Schiller Archives in Weimar. This exposure deepened his admiration for Goethe’s holistic approach to knowledge, blending art, science, and spirituality. In Faust, Steiner found a narrative that mirrored his own beliefs about human development: Faust’s relentless quest for knowledge and his pact with Mephistopheles symbolized the soul’s journey through temptation and redemption. Steiner interpreted God’s wager with Mephistopheles as an affirmation of human potential, aligning with his view that spiritual growth arises from overcoming earthly challenges.

In his lectures and writings, such as those collected in The Mysteries of the East and of Christianity (1909), Steiner used Faust to illustrate his concept of the evolution of consciousness. He saw Faust’s ultimate salvation—guided by divine wisdom and love (embodied by Gretchen)—as a metaphor for the Anthroposophical path toward higher spiritual awareness. Steiner’s performances of Faust scenes, notably in 1910 at the Munich Congress, further demonstrated his belief in the play’s transformative power, using it to inspire those present
