The Tourmaline: A Monograph by Friedrich Benesch and Bernhard Wöhrmann could be appropriately renamed The Tourmaline: The Christ Stone. It's a full color, beautifully rendered, oversized rare out of print book. It's highly sought after for its unique comprehensive description of the Tourmaline, which the authors describe as significant for the entire mineral life of the earth, for the Christ's relationship to the earth, and for the human soul.

The book features an anthroposophical exploration of one of nature’s most extraordinary gems. Celebrated for its unparalleled range of colors and intricate formations, the tourmaline takes center stage in this visually stunning and creatively described rich volume. Featuring approximately 400 breathtaking color photographs by some of the world’s finest photographers, this book showcases the gem’s mesmerizing beauty and diversity.

Beyond its lavish illustrations, the monograph offers a profound study of tourmaline from a Goethean (living scientific) perspective, delving into its natural, historical, and cultural significance. The authors trace humanity’s fascination with tourmalines across centuries, revealing how these multifaceted, polychromatic stones have been imbued with a wealth of meanings, often overlooked until now.

The late author, Friedrich Benesch, was a Christian Community priest.

Priests in the Christian Community, like Friedrich Benesch, are trained to integrate Steiner’s esoteric Christianity, which emphasizes the Christ Impulse—the transformative power of Christ’s incarnation, death, and resurrection—as a universal spiritual event rather than a dogmatic religion.

Tourmaline: The Christ Stone

After laying a detailed foundation in the physical-life relationships of the Tourmaline, the book culminates with a description of the Tourmaline as a Christ Stone.

In light of Christian apocalypse religion, therefore, the tourmaline becomes the Christ Stone - in a threefold sense.

Firstly, in its selfless mediating capacity, the tourmaline becomes the organ of perception of the Christ being for the entire mineral realm of the Earth.

Secondly, the tourmaline becomes the simulacrum (representation) of that which, in the body and blood of the corpse of the Son of Man, prepared and paved the way for the resurrection.

Thirdly, the tourmaline becomes the prophet of that which paves the way for the Heavenly Jerusalem. It is the future of the Heavenly Jerusalem. it is the future of the resurrection, Christ's future on Earth and in the cosmos, the future of the mineral realm and of the tourmaline.

The  tourmaline induces, when gazed upon intently this futuristic feeling to a future state in which it will be specifically raised up and inserted into Christ's work of cosmic transformation, a work of resurrecting the future bodily nature of the cosmos to partake of the Heavenly Jerusalem. even more than  is the case with other minerals.

In the direct experiencing of surprise and amazement and awe and indeed of devotion and love . . . such a wondrous and glorious natural being as the tourmaline can reveal itself to humanity  . . and from human recognition, finds it’s way to awaken to itself.

Fourteen years of meticulous research, including visits to scientific collections in London, Paris, Berlin, and Vienna, as well as collaborations with global experts, inform this comprehensive work.

Translated from the German by Bruce Allen, this abridged English edition (based on the out-of-print third edition of Der Turmalin: Eine Monographie, Urachhaus, 2000) is both a treasure for gem enthusiasts and a trailblazing contribution to mineralogy. With its blend of scientific insight, historical context, and artistic appreciation, The Tourmaline: A Monograph is a timeless volume that will inspire and captivate readers for generations.
